Sanctuary Resources

Sanctuary is an essential component of the Chapel's Christian witness.  For more than fifty years, the congregation has been part of the sanctuary movement in the Bay Area.  What we have learned over that time resulted in a standing provision in the Chapel's constitution to define sanctuary and its ground rules: C23.01.F14

For a brief history of the Sanctuary Movement in Berkeley and the Chapel's involvement, see Kat Jerman's well-researched article "Berkeley's Sanctuary Movement" on FoundSF.

The Chapel offered sanctuary several times between 2014 and 2017.

Declaring Sanctuary -  a short (< 3 min.) documentary about the Chapel's renewal of the offer of sanctuary in 2016.

See news media coverage of sanctuary at the Chapel in 2016-2017.

How To Find Us

We are located near UC Berkeley campus at the corner of College Avenue and Haste Street (a one-way street).

On public transit: Take BART to either Rockridge or Downtown Berkeley. The 51B picks up at both and stops directly in front of the Chapel.

By car: Street parking is limited in the area, but the Underhill Parking lot is just across the street and parking (fee) there is usually ample.
