A community of faith at work in the world.

University Lutheran Chapel is a vibrant worshipping community in Berkeley, located just south of the UC Berkeley campus. For sixty years, we have served as both a parish congregation and Lutheran Campus Ministry. We offer a unique combination of progressive theology, innovative worship, pastoral care and caring community. As a community "at work in the world," we are committed to justice, respect for conscience, and equality for all people, especially those most at risk.

We are especially PROUD of our Lutheran Church! It is a particularly proud time to be a Lutheran as voting members at the Churchwide Assembly in Minneapolis in August lifted the ban against clergy in same gender partnerships.  The church now officially allows for the recognition, celebration and liturgical blessing of relationships, unions, partnerships and marriages in our congregations of people of all sexual orientations and gender identities.  Thanks be to God.  All are really welcome in the ELCA.

We are a welcoming church. The Chapel is proud to be part of the "welcoming movement," affirming that people of all sexual orientations and gender identities are invited to participate fully in the life of this community of faith.  We were one of the first congregations in the Bay Area to declare itself to be Reconciling in Christ (RIC), and have been very active in supporting the work of Extraordinary Lutheran Ministries (ELM).

We are a sanctuary parish. We are a proud founder of the East Bay Sanctuary Covenant.  Recently we have taken steps to work with the New Sanctuary Movement.  We commit ourselves to solidarity with refugees, immigrants, aliens, conscientious objectors, and all others who seek sanctuary and safety among the people of our community.
