Administrator Position -- Filled

8/31/2022

Job Posting - Parish Administrator
University Lutheran Chapel of Berkeley is located just south of the UC Berkeley campus. We are a progressive, inclusive, social-justice-oriented congregation within the Lutheran tradition. A small parish with a huge heart, we believe in and work toward the transformation of the world. We’re looking to hire an administrator to support our energetic pastor, leadership team, strong council, and congregation. The church facility is also home to other organizations - SHARE El Salvador and the United Nations Association of the East Bay - who need support from the parish administrator.

This position requires a wide variety of skills and interests. If you were the administrator this week you would’ve:
  • Received the music for Sunday worship from our Music Director and made something cool with it in Canva.
  • Collected all the news and happenings around the congregation and elsewhere and put them into a MailChimp newsletter.
  • Talked on the phone with a congregant or two and helped them find the information they’re looking for, or helped them set up a Zoom link for an upcoming event.
  • Made sure that incoming requests get to the right people.
  • Checked the mail and email and made sure that any incoming invoices or expenses get paid on time, then kept the expense receipts well labeled and organized.
  • Put the Sunday offerings into the accounting software and then taken the deposit down the street to the bank, maybe stopping for an iced coffee on the way back.
  • Gotten creative with the worship slideshow in Canva and Keynote.
  • Walked around the church with a clipboard feeling real official to make sure all office and hospitality supplies are well stocked, and ordered anything lacking.
  • Talked with another organization in the building about a cool event they’d like to hold and worked with them about scheduling it on the Chapel calendar.
  • Solved a printer problem using Google, the office equipment tech support line, and your own gumption.
  • Sent a reminder email to the upcoming Sunday worship leaders to make sure everyone gets the information they need and can prepare.
  • A variety of other tasks that keep the job interesting. Some examples: gotten creative with the printer to make giant posters for worship; helped to hang bunting in the sanctuary; helped a pigeon find its way out of the office; submitted the necessary tax forms to the county and state; helped to reupholster a kneeler; made a flyer for an upcoming event; sent out an email organizing a building-wide potluck lunch.

What would be helpful in the job:
  • Knowledge of software: Mac OS; Microsoft Office; Dropbox; GSuite; Zoom; Quickbooks Online; Weebly website editor. If you aren’t familiar with any specific program we use, that’s ok! More important is a willingness to learn and use Google and YouTube to figure it out.
  • A high level of organization is super helpful! We need the whole team to be able to access the information they need across Dropbox and Google Drive.
  • Some basic knowledge of accounting/bookkeeping would be ideal for keeping track of financial details and making checks.
  • Excellent written and spoken communication skills that translate on the phone, in email, and in person.
  • Sensibilities about confidentiality and care in how and when to share information.

Ideal but not required:
  • It is wonderful if the administrator can be present on Sunday mornings and learn how to use our A/V technology for hybrid worship.
  • The ideal candidate would be willing to be trained in our bookkeeping process and eventually take over the monthly financial reconciliation.

Hours:
This job is part-time and we are flexible about how many hours it will be weekly. The current plan would be for 20+ hours/week, but if you’re interested and something else works better for you, please still apply. We can be flexible when hours are worked on a semester-by-semester basis.

Compensation and Benefits:
Hourly rate is $26-$28. Additionally, there is a stipend for health insurance through Covered California, 3 weeks paid vacation, and national holidays.

Next Steps:
Please email a résumé to job@ulcberkeley.org. Sorry, we can’t handle phone inquiries for this position. If this posting is still up, we are still accepting applications.
